Joost finished?

Interesting article on Joost from Portfolio.com. It seemed like Joost was going to take over the Internet video world back when they launched a couple of years ago, but when was the last time you heard the word Joost?. Proof that the delivering Internet video on a profitable and massive scale is still an elusive goal. More importantly, it proves that users don’t want to download yet another application to watch video on their computers.

IAB Ad Specs

I spent a couple of years producing banners before I’d even heard of the IAB. Who knew there was an Interactive Advertising Bureau that made up specs for online ads? It is quite helpful to get a sense of what should be industry standards. But doesn’t it always seem like every site makes up their own damn sizes, just because they can? “We need a 160×600, a 720×90 and a 319×831…12k…gif” Thanks.

Lorem Ipsum Dolar Sit Amet…What?

It gets ugly when designers decide to type stupid things like ‘Why is Adam Dachis Mocking Me?’ instead of Latin text in PSDs. Unfortunately, I’ve had the pleasure of coming across the creative writings of designers on a live website, months later (proof that programmers don’t read the copy). It also gets ugly when you try and make up your own Latin/Greek text….”Lorem ipsum dolar sit amet…consecutive ..er..ahh..frigator..why does Adm Dachis hate me?”

When I do need some real good fake text, I always head straight to Lipsum.com – they have plenty of fake text for you to choose from and even have a generator that will create just the right amount of text. You may also be interested to know that “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..” is an actual line of text from the work, “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC.

Conducting Your Orchestra

I stumbled upon this interesting post on the life of a Producer at Fantasy Interactive, with a bunch of comments from fellow producers. “A good producer is like a great conductor, who can make every part of the orchestra perform in sync. You have to love the abuse, smile through it and reap the benefits when everything turns out right.” Amen.

Producer vs Project Manager

I’m always fascinated by the subtle differences between a Producer and a Project Manager. To help distinguish the two, I’ve put together a quick cheat sheet:

Producer: Wanted to be a filmmaker but gave up on that idea after working in film for 6 months getting coffee for a bunch of thankless bastards at 4am, on a lobster boat, getting paid nothing.
Project Manager: Wanted to be a Project Manager after college.

Producer: Makes a project schedule when the project starts. Never looks at it again.
Project Manager: Updates the project schedule every day.

Producer: Spends the whole day walking and talking.
Project Manager: Sits in the office perfecting that Gantt chart.

Producer: Secretly enjoys cracking open Photoshop when the designers aren’t looking.
Project Manager: Does not have Photoshop installed.

Producer: Knows enough code to be dangerous. But seriously, is lost without Dreamweaver.
Project Manager: Does not code. Or design.

Producer: Swears every other word.
Project Manager: Uses words like ‘Mmmhhmm’ and ‘Nnnkaaay?’.

Producer: Goes to SXSW to booze it up with former co-workers.
Project Manager: Studies for the PMI exam.

Producer: Cozies up to team members to get them to do what they’re supposed to do.
Project Manager: Tells people what they need to do. Calls them to tell them they sent them an email. Pisses them off.

Producer: 2 days before the project is due, all hell breaks loose. No sleep for 48 hours. Spends the night making edits in the HTML and writing copy they forgot about.
Project Manager: Completes another credit toward the PMP certification.

Producer: Comes in at 10:00 AM. Pissed off cause they drank too much last night.
Project Manager: Schedules an 8:30 AM daily meeting.

Producer: Mac
Project Manager: PC

Photoshop – On the Web

Photoshop Express

Back when I was a producer at..ahem..cheap companies, producers weren’t allowed to have the full version of Photoshop. We got Photoshop Elements instead. Now Adobe is working on an online version of the ubiquitous photo editing software, Photoshop Express, still in beta. At first glance, it’s a slick Flash app that allows you to upload photos and crop, adjust levels and create galleries of your images with up to 2gb of free storage. The intro Flash screen is pretty cool and the application was intuitive to use. Maybe next-gen producers wont’t even need Photoshop – they’ll just use it on the Web?!

Take it for a test drive.

Gubb

Gubb

Gubb. It’s a great online application that lets you track a bunch of lists in a really slick and easy to use way. Once you set-up an account, you can start creating lists. For each project, I create a new list and can quickly add tasks, sub-tasks, notes, action items, etc, for each project. Using the AJAX interface, you can drag and drop lists around on the screen to re-prioritize your projects or lists. Gubb also allows you to re-order tasks, mark them as complete or delete them.

Every time I come out of a meeting with a bunch of action items, I enter them into Gubb so I don’t have to plaster my monitor with Post-it notes. Gubb! give it a try.

I love the iPhone

iPhone

The first day the iPhone went on sale, I had no intention of going to buy one and being first in line. But I had been studying the iPhone since it was announced and thought it was too good to be true. The day they went on sale, I just decided to stop by my local Apple store and see if it was all it was cracked up to be. Yes, it was.

Months later, I still marvel at its technology and design, as if it were some relic from the future that had been transported back in time. As a producer, it’s like having a computer in my pocket as I run around herding cats or putting out fires. I can respond to emails, text co-workers about meetings, take pictures of an intense whiteboard session, use the phone, and did I mention, surf the Web?

It’s amazing. It blows everything else out of the water. And the SDK is going to be insane. Get one!

Kick-off

Hi. This is my first blog post. I’ve been an Interactive Producer for a while now, so I figured I’d start a little blog about creating and managing interactive projects. We’ll see what happens along the way.
